Par nécessité, un livre sur Luther et la philosophie ne peut qu'être un livre sur la haine de la philosophie. Que signifie haïr la philosophie en 1520 ? C'est une question de philosophie, car la philosophie en est l'objet. Mais c'est aussi une question d'histoire. Ce livre montre comment une question de la philosophie a pu se constituer en mobile d'une réforme religieuse. Luther s'est fait une vocation d'« aboyer contre la philosophie et exhorter à l'Écriture sainte ». Ce mot d'ordre ne se comprend que dans son monde : celui des livres et des Écritures, de l'École et du cloître, des censures et des condamnations, celui d'Aristote. Il n'y a pas d'un côté la Réforme, de l'autre la critique de la philosophie. La Réforme est le nerf à vif de l'antiphilosophie luthérienne, et l'antiphilosophie a fait des années 1510-1530 une conjoncture doctrinale à nulle autre pareille. L'histoire et elle seule offre les instruments d'une méditation philosophique de la Réforme. Elle s'impose ici sous ses formes les plus rigoureuses : histoire de l'Église, de l'Université, histoire de l'exégèse, histoire du livre. En retour, la Réforme relance l'enquête sur l'effectivité historique de la philosophie, dans la diversité de ses rythmes doctrinaux.
